Objective Validity and the Fact of Reason: Kant’s Justification of Empirical Cognition on Practical Grounds
University of Oxford, 2026
Thesis supervisor: Prof. Joseph Schear.
The thesis reconstructs a practical justification of empirical cognition in Kant. It argues that the Transcendental Deduction depends on the claim that the objects of cognition of all discursive beings instantiate the categories—a claim that cannot be established on theoretical grounds alone.
Drawing on Kant’s account of the moral law and shared practical objects, it develops an argument for accepting this claim on practical grounds. It then considers the consequences for empirical and moral scepticism, the primacy of practical reason, and the unity of reason.
